Registering the Death of a Baby in Scotland
We understand how devastating the loss of a baby can be. If you are facing this difficult situation, please know that the registration process in Scotland is handled with care, compassion, and support.
By law, the death must be registered within 8 days.
Who Can Register the Death?
The following people can register the death:
- A parent or guardian
- A close relative
- Someone present at the time of death
- The occupier of the premises where the death occurred
How the Process Works
Medical Certificate of Cause of Death
If your baby was born alive and later passed away, the hospital or doctor will complete a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (Form 11).
This is sent electronically to the registrar’s office — you do not need to collect it yourself.
Registering the Death
- Once the registrar has received the certificate, you can contact them to complete the registration.
- Registration is usually done by phone or appointment, depending on the registrar’s process.
If Your Baby Was Stillborn
- If your baby was stillborn after 24 weeks of pregnancy and showed no signs of life, a stillbirth must be registered (not a death).
- A doctor or midwife will issue a Medical Certificate of Stillbirth, which will also be sent directly to the registrar.
- Stillbirths must be registered within 21 days.
How to Find Your Local Registrar
You can register a death at any registrar’s office in Scotland — it doesn’t have to be in the district where the death occurred. Use the National Records of Scotland Registrar Search to find your nearest office.
Alternatively, your funeral director can assist you in making contact.
What You’ll Receive, After registration, the registrar will provide:
- A Certificate of Registration of Death (Form 14) — required to proceed with funeral arrangements
- Official copies of the death extract, if requested
