Death at Home
What to Do When Someone Dies at Home
If a person passes away at home, the first step is to contact their GP (doctor).
If the death is expected, and the doctor has a recent medical history and attended the person during their last illness, they will:
- Confirm the death
- Provide a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death
In Scotland, the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death is sent electronically and directly to the local registrar by the GP or hospital. You do not need to collect or deliver this yourself. The registrar will contact you, or you can get in touch with them to complete the registration process by phone or appointment.
When to Contact Us
Once the doctor has attended, please call us on 01592 268847 so we can bring your loved one into our care.
We are available day or night, every day of the year. You do not need to wait for the certificate to be processed before contacting us. If you would like your loved one to remain at home for a little while, please let us know — we will support whatever feels right for you and your family.
