When a death occurs

If a death occurs at home, it is necessary to inform a doctor who will then issue a Medical Certificate of Death after visiting the deceased or after you have visited the surgery. If a death occurs in the hospital, the process is similar, although you should apply to the hospital for the certificate. If a death has been reported to the procurator fiscal, they will issue a certificate which the police will then deliver to you. For more information, call us today.

Registering a death

All deaths must be registered either by a relative, a witness or the person who is arranging the funeral of the deceased. A Certificate of Death is required along with a birth certificate and, if available, a medical card. You will need the date or place of death, the full name of the deceased, their date or place of birth, their occupation and home address. You will also need the details of their spouse if applicable. Their social security certificate and pension books are to be sent to the DSS, with copies of death certificates taken for banks, insurers and solicitors.
